Stephen Joe Thurman passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 76.
Steve was born on November 12, 1940, in Frederick, Oklahoma, to Hugh and Eva (Maylen) Thurman. Steve and his mother moved to Enid in 1943 while his father served in World War II. He graduated from Enid High School in 1958 and attended Oklahoma State University, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. On August 19, 1960, Steve married Judy Dailey, his high school sweetheart. He returned to Enid shortly after and attended Phillips University, graduating in 1964.
In 1961, Steve joined his father's business, Thurman Bridge Supply. He added a concrete block manufacturing plant to the company, renaming the business Thurman Bridge & Block and, later, Thurman Building Materials. In addition, he was the owner of Bridge & Highway Materials in Enid and Designer Cast Stone in Oklahoma City. During his professional career, Steve was active in the National Concrete Masonry Association. He was heavily involved in local committees and organizations, including AMBUCS and Rotary Club of Enid, and served as president of Oakwood Country Club. He was a member of Enid's First United Methodist Church and served on numerous boards there. After retirement, he enjoyed Tuesday night poker and was a regular morning coffee club attendee at Davinci's, where he and friends solved the world's problems.
Steve was a loving husband and father, and a ridiculously proud grandfather. He was happiest spending time with family and friends, especially if it was at a football game cheering for his beloved Oklahoma State Cowboys. When you needed it most, he was quick with a smile or a joke or a Chivas and water. He always explained the proper way to spell Stephen, and you couldn't spend time with him without knowing how deeply he could love.
He is survived by wife Judy, of the home; son, Brad Thurman and Misty Turley of Tulsa; daughter, Cindy Thurman Lang and husband, Tim, of Enid; and four grandchildren, Katy Lang Sheets and husband, John, of Oklahoma City, Michael Lang and wife, Carrie, of Enid, Chris Thurman and wife, Jessica, of Edmond, and Patrick Thurman of Helsinki, Finland. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Yvette Thurman Boston and infant brother William Thurman.
A public memorial will be held Friday, September 15, 2017, at 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church in Enid. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice Circle of Love or First United Methodist Church with Ladusau-Evans serving as custodians of the fund.
Arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Enid native Harold T. Holden will be inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s annual Western Heritage Awards next month.

The awards, to be given April 21-22, celebrate the legacy of those whose works in literature, music, film and television reflect the significant stories of the western genre, according to a news release from the museum. There are more than 200 men and women honored within the Hall of Great Westerners.

After graduating from Enid High School, Holden attended Oklahoma State University and graduated from Texas Academy of Art in Houston. He served with the Navy during Vietnam aboard the U.S.S. Rainier, and eventually became a professional fine artist.

The observatory atop Enid High School was erected in 1963, the only one of its kind in Oklahoma. It was funded by a government program put into place to keep the U.S. competitive with the Soviet Union in the early years of human space exploration.

On Tuesday, February 28, the venue was re-dedicated as the Dr. Nancy Currie-Gregg Observatory at Enid High School. As a NASA astronaut, Currie-Gregg is a direct descendent of the “Space Race.”

March 1 was “Dr. Nancy Currie-Gregg Day” in Enid, commemorating the 15th anniversary of her final launch on the Space Shuttle. Currie-Gregg flew four times, serving as flight engineer and robotic-arm operator on each of her missions. She still works for NASA in Houston.

Class loses Judy Cozart Pendleton

Obituary for Judy Pendleton

 A Celebration of Life Service for Judy M. Pendleton age 76 of Enid will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Ladusau-Evans Chapel with The Rev. Bishop J. Randal Hackworth officiating. Burial will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
Judy was born March 28, 1940 to John and Alberta (McCracken) Cozart and passed away Thursday, November 24, 2016 at the home. She attended Enid Public Schools graduating in 1958. She married her teenage sweetheart Dale Pendleton on August 16, 1958. Judy loved her church and family very much. Her four grandchildren were very special to her.
She worked for S&H Green Stamps for 20 years, the last 6 years as Senior Manager. She then went to work as a teller for Security National Bank for 14 years retiring in 2005. Judy volunteered for the Horn of Plenty and was a member of the Gideon’s Auxiliary. She attended the Community Church of the Plains. She had taught various Sunday school classes, Past President of Women’s Missionary Society and Church pianist for 60 years.
She is survived by her husband Dale of 58 years, two sons, Scott and wife Kristy Pendleton of Enid, Darin and his wife Lori Pendleton of Edmond, her wonderful grandchildren, Shane and Lexie Pendleton, Kayla Enloe and husband Chad, and Nicole Pendleton, two sisters, Shirley Celli and husband John and Mary Fritz and husband Mike, sister-in-law Dean Ellis, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents and stillborn twin sons.
Memorial may be made to Community Church of the Plains with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodians of the funds.
